Susan Owens
A Radio 4 Book of the Week 'A marvellous book' Ali Smith Shaped by the cycle of the natural world, a fresh look at the life and work of John Constable to celebrate the 250th anniversary of his birth in 2026. As exhilarating as a lungful of oxygen: that’s how some of his contemporaries felt about John Constable’s paintings. Others, though, were baffled by his uncompromisingly fresh and realistic treatment of the natural world. Susan Owens follows Constable through the seasons, tracing the rhythms and resonances of the artist’s year to offer a vivid, unconventional perspective on this beloved figure. Whether in London in May, preparing pictures for exhibition and longing for the Suffolk spring, or painting boat-builders and waiting to be married in a particularly gloomy September, Constable’s life and work were unusually shaped by the yearly cycles of weather and agriculture, as well as by the often competing demands of the art world. Raised in Suffolk and trained to manage his father's land, his rural background had an enduring impact on his painting. His was the approach of one who knew the laneways, ploughs and millponds he painted intimately, and who understood the countryside as a place of both labour and natural phenomena. Though today he is often considered a traditional artist, in truth John Constable was a radical. His sketchbooks and paintings reject second-hand, slip-shod versions of nature, instead subjecting the land, its people and industry to intense scrutiny; developing a new kind of painting to fit the landscape he saw with his farmer’s eye and felt beneath the soles of his boots.

This stunning exhibition unveils the remarkable art and historical legacy of two mysterious kingdoms of ancient China. Phoenix Kingdoms brings to life the distinctive Bronze Age cultures that flourished along the middle course of the Yangzi River in South Central China about 2,500 years ago. With over 150 objects on loan from five major Chinese museums, Phoenix Kingdoms explores the artistic and spiritual landscape of the southern borderland of the Zhou dynasty, featuring remarkable archaeological finds unearthed from aristocratic tombs of the phoenix-worshipping Zeng and Chu kingdoms. By revealing the splendid material cultures of these legendary states, whose history has only recently been recovered, Phoenix Kingdoms highlights the importance of this region in forming a southern style that influenced centuries of Chinese art. This exhibition catalogue includes six essays that contextualize the stylistically rich material—mythical creatures, elaborate patterns, and elegant forms—and introduces readers to the technologically and artistically sophisticated cultures that thrived before China’s first empire. Lavishly illustrated with over 240 images, Phoenix Kingdoms showcases works from the exhibition across six categories—jades, bronze ritual vessels, musical instruments and weapons, lacquerware for luxury and ceremony, funerary bronze and wood objects, and textiles and unique objects featuring distinctive designs—many of which are considered national treasures. Published in association with the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco.

'The best book on Pompeii I've ever read' STEPHEN FRY
'Brilliant' TOM HOLLAND

A vast area of Pompeii is being excavated for the first time, revealing astonishing insights into how people really lived. In this revelatory new history, Director of Pompeii Gabriel Zuchtriegel shares the untold stories that are at last emerging.

Pompeii is a world frozen in time. There are unmade beds, dishes left drying, tools abandoned by workmen, bodies embracing with love and fear. And alongside the remnants of everyday life, there are captivating works of art: lifelike portraits, exquisite frescos and mosaics, and the extraordinary sculpture of a sleeping boy, curled up under a blanket that's too small.

The Buried City reconstructs the catastrophe that destroyed Pompeii on 24 August 79 CE, and offers a behind-the-scenes tour of the city as it was before: who lived here, what mattered to them, and what happened in their final hours. It gives us a vivid sense of Pompeii's continuing relevance, and proves that ancient history is much closer to us than we think.

A comprehensive look at the work of the groundbreaking photographer, foregrounding her importance as a surrealist artist.

Lee Miller (1907–77) assumed many roles over the course of her remarkable life – from avant-gardist to commercial photographer to war correspondent and photojournalist – and to each of these roles she brought her unique artistic sensibility. Though she was intimately connected with many of the leading figures associated with surrealism, including Man Ray, Pablo Picasso, and Max Ernst, and participated in major exhibitions of her time, Miller was also at times marginalised in the art world as a woman and as a photographer in an era when photography’s status as an art form was not widely accepted. Her genre-bending work incorporated portraiture, fashion, still life, landscape, reportage, and advertising: fearless, poetic and surreal, it reveals a world of uncanny beauty and sensual ambiguity – often with a humorous edge.

Drawing on new primary research, Lee Miller features essays exploring every aspect of Miller’s career, from her early years in Paris, New York and Cairo to her wartime journalism and late portraits. Additionally, the British novelist, playwright, and poet Deborah Levy offers a personal reflection on Miller and her art. Beautifully illustrated with hundreds of images, the book provides a comprehensive exploration of Lee Miller, revealing her as one of the most urgent creative voices of the twentieth century.

THE INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

A THE ECONOMIST, HISTORY TODAY, NEW YORK TIMES, NEW YORKER AND WASHINGTON POST BOOK OF THE YEAR

ONE OF BARACK OBAMA'S FAVORITE BOOKS OF 2025

LONGLISTED FOR THE 2025 ANDREW CARNEGIE MEDAL FOR EXCELLENCE IN NONFICTION

On the 250th anniversary of America's founding - a landmark history of the US Constitution for a troubling new era.

The US Constitution is among the oldest constitutions in the world - and one of the most difficult to amend. Although nearly twelve thousand amendments have been proposed since 1789, only twenty-seven have ever been ratified. Tellingly, the Constitution has not been meaningfully amended since 1971. Without amendment, the risk of political violence rises. So does the risk of constitutional change by presidential power.

Leading Harvard historian Jill Lepore captures the stories of generations of ordinary people who have attempted everything from abolishing the Electoral College to guaranteeing environmental rights, hoping to mend their nation. Recounting the history of America through centuries of efforts to realize the promise of the Constitution, we witness how nearly all those bids have failed.

We the People is the sweeping account of a struggle, arguing that the Constitution was never intended to be preserved, but was expected to be gradually altered. At a time when the risk of political violence is all too real, it hints at the prospects for a better, amended America.

Afshin Matin-Asgari
A chronicle of intrigue and influence in the Iran-US entanglement

Ironic plot twists and colorful characters abound in Afshin Matin-Asgari’s accessible history of relations between the United States and Iran. The missionaries and educators who descended on Iran in the early nineteenth century made way for the next century’s oilmen, CIA agents, scholars, and arms dealers in the assertion of US imperial priorities. Whether Iran resisted or succumbed to US interests, it couldn’t fail to be shaped by the superpower.

Matin-Asgari offers fresh takes on familiar topics: America’s rise as a Middle East hegemon during the Cold War; the special relationship between Washington and the shah; the Iranian Revolution and hostage crisis; the Iran-Iraq war; the Islamic Republic’s peculiar anti-imperialism; the decades of onerous American sanctions; Israel’s intervention in Iran-US relations; the ascendance of Trump; and the 2025 attempt by the United States and Israel to bring regime change to Tehran.

A labyrinthine tale of American imperial misadventures, Axis of Empire incorporates and challenges scholarly narratives while offering a sophisticated yet highly readable account of Iran-US history.
