Daniella Ohad
Explore 100 pivotal moments when creativity and culture intersected to shape modern life.

Design is not just about objects—it’s about ideas that have changed the world. From William Morris’s Red House and the Great Exhibition of 1851 to the Bauhaus, the iPhone, and 3D-printed bridges, 100 Milestones in Modern Design traces the decisive events that transformed the way we live, work, and see the world. Drawing on decades of scholarship, curator and educator Daniella Ohad presents a panoramic and provocative view of design’s evolution as a social, technological, conceptual, and aesthetic force.

Through 100 concise, visually rich entries, Ohad connects the dots between invention and ideology, showing how design has responded to—and influenced—industrialization, urbanization, war, feminism, consumerism, globalization, climate change, and sustainability. Each milestone represents a point of transformation:

  • The birth of the modern home with William Morris’s Red House
  • The advent of industrial furniture through Thonet’s bentwood chairs
  • The modernist ideals of the Bauhaus
  • The cultural impact of Levi’s blue jeans
  • The utopian visions of glass architecture
  • Steve Jobs’s first visit to Japan
  • The role of the sale of Yves Saint Laurent in shaping the design market

Ohad reveals design as an ongoing dialogue between progress and purpose—a mirror of the societies that create it and shape our lives. Her selection, deeply informed yet accessible, reframes modern design history as a story of courage, experimentation, and the pursuit of better living.

Beautifully illustrated and globally inclusive, 100 Milestones in Modern Design invites you to see design not as decoration, but as an instrument of change—from the materials that define eras to the movements that define meaning.

For designers, educators, students, and anyone fascinated by creativity’s role in shaping civilization, this book offers a vital perspective: The history of design is the history of us all.

The untold story of how the Dutch conquered the European book market and became the world's greatest bibliophiles The Dutch Golden Age has long been seen as the age of Rembrandt and Vermeer, whose paintings captured the public imagination and came to represent the marvel that was the Dutch Republic. Yet there is another, largely overlooked marvel in the Dutch world of the seventeenth century: books. In this fascinating account, Andrew Pettegree and Arthur der Weduwen show how the Dutch produced many more books than pictures and bought and owned more books per capita than any other part of Europe. Key innovations in marketing, book auctions, and newspaper advertising brought stability to a market where elsewhere publishers faced bankruptcy, and created a population uniquely well-informed and politically engaged. This book tells for the first time the remarkable story of the Dutch conquest of the European book world and shows the true extent to which these pious, prosperous, quarrelsome, and generous people were shaped by what they read.

*Sunday Times Bestseller*'Britain's favourite German historian' Sunday Times'Superb... Hoyer finds the town of Weimar a perfect microcosm for a country teetering into darkness... intelligent, original and well-researched' Daily TelegraphFrom bestselling historian Katja Hoyer comes a gripping story of life during the rise and reign of Hitler through the eyes of the people of Weimar*One of the most anticipated books of 2026 according to the Sunday Times, Financial Times and The Telegraph*Weimar looms large in German history: a crucible of democracy and dictatorship. This ancient town nestled in the heart of the country was home to some of Europe's greatest thinkers, Goethe and Schiller, Liszt and Nietzsche among them. It gave its name to the ambitious Weimar Republic crafted in the aftermath of the First World War. But it was also where fascism took hold. Where Bauhaus architects first experimented with new ways of living, Buchenwald was dug out of a beech forest. Weimar shows us a town and its people on the edge of catastrophe. Drawing on a wealth of new archival research, acclaimed historian Katja Hoyer takes us from 1919 to 1939 as she tells the stories of the men and women who lived through the new republic and Hitler's regime. We encounter a vividly drawn cast of characters, from bookbinder Carl Weirich and hotel owners Rosa and Arthur Schmidt, to Friedrich Nietzsche's sister Elisabeth. Here are fascists and socialists, artists and workers, politicians and citizens, who, as the events of history swept them up, became witnesses, perpetrators, victims and bystanders. An unforgettable picture of lives and choices in extraordinary circumstances, Weimar takes us deep into the heart of the storm – to the town that dreamt of a better world, and woke up to tyranny.

Robin Yassin-Kassab

In a matter of days, an intense rebel offensive brought down one of the world’s most entrenched regimes, ending the sixty-year Baathist dictatorship and the Assad family’s grip on Syria. The speed of the collapse stunned observers. Yet this was no sudden fall. It was the culmination of a revolution forged through years of protest, repression and resistance.

The fall triggered celebrations and freedoms Syrians had not experienced in decades. But the cost has been immense, and the wounds of violence are unresolved. As the country enters a precarious new phase, urgent questions remain: can justice be delivered and a fractured society rebuilt? Or will competing powers and unaddressed grievances pull Syria back into conflict?

Drawing on first-hand reporting and interviews across Syria, Robin Yassin-Kassab traces this pivotal moment through the lives of those who lived it. The Blood Between Us is a portrait of a country suspended between collapse and possibility – and a clear-eyed account of who will shape what comes next.

An original history of Russia's thousand-year past, tracing the forces and the myths that have shaped Putin's politics and rekindled the Cold War.

Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine has reshaped history. In the decades after the collapse of Soviet communism, the West convinced itself that liberal democracy would henceforth be the dominant, ultimately unique, system of governance - a hubris that shaped how the West would treat Russia for the next two decades. But history wasn’t over.

Putin is a paradox. In the early years of his presidency, he appeared to commit himself to friendship with the West, suggesting that Russia could join the European Union or even NATO. He said he supported free-market democracy and civil rights. But the Putin of those years is unrecognisable today. The Putin of the 2020s is an autocratic nationalist, dedicated to repression at home and anti-Western militarism abroad. So, what happened? Was he lying when he proclaimed his support for freedom, democracy and friendship with the West? Or, was he sincere? Did he change his views at some stage between then and now? And if that is the case, what happened to change him?

Putin and the Return of History examines these questions in the context of Russia’s thousand-year past, tracing the forces and the myths that have shaped Putin’s politics of aggression: the enduring terror of encirclement by outsiders, the subjugation of the individual to the cause of the state, the collectivist values that allow the sacrifice of human lives in battle, the willingness to lie and deceive, the co-opting of religion and the belief in Great Russia’s mission to change the world.

Trace the history of mankind's perception of the sky and outer space in 300 easy-to-follow maps and cartographics, from the dawn of humanity to the present day. For thousands of years, humans have looked to the sky to make sense of the world. Long before astronomy became a formal discipline, observations of the Sun, Moon, planets and stars shaped calendars, navigation and systems of belief across many cultures. A History of the Sky traces this global history, examining how societies developed the concepts and methods that allowed humanity to interpret the cosmos. As with its bestselling companion, A History of the World in 500 Maps, the book uses infographics and maps to show how people throughout history have understood the universe and to consider what the future of space exploration might hold. It follows early astronomical traditions in Babylon, China, the Maya world and Polynesia; the emergence of new ideas in classical Greece; and the scientific advances that transformed astronomy in early modern Europe and the Enlightenment era. It then considers the modern age, in which humans have ventured from Earth to the Moon and beyond, sending probes through the Solar System and signals into deep space. Designed for keen enthusiasts and curious newcomers alike, A History of the Sky reconnects readers with the ancient fascination of looking up. It reveals how today’s science rests on centuries of observation, argument and a thirst for adventure – and addresses a central question: How do we know what we know about the universe?
