A wide-ranging exploration of comics, characters, and the visual language of KAWS and his contemporaries.

KAWS. Art & Comics explores the interplay between comics, comic strips, cartoons, and fine art. It places the American artist KAWS in dialog with selected contemporary stances, focusing on the artistic autonomy of his characters—figures that unite characteristics of street, pop, commercial, and public art. Comics are characterized by a universal language and exist in many cultures as an accessible way of telling stories graphically, in words and images.

Jean-Michel Basquiat and Ad Reinhardt were fine artists who created comics in a near-classic vein. Even before the advent of photography and (animated) films, caricature, satire, and frame-by-frame narration offered a powerful way to convey stories across national, generational, and social boundaries. From the 1960s onward, artists such as
Keith Haring and H.C. Westermann questioned the division between high and low art. Prominent contemporary artists in this tradition include KAWS, Joyce Pensato, Cosima von Bonin, and Peter Saul.

KAWS began as a graffiti artist in the 1990s, later overpainting posters and advertisements in public spaces by obscuring faces with a stylized skull and crossbones. He is known for monumental figurative sculptures in bronze, wood, and inflatables. His COMPANIONs and ACCOMPLICEs display a range of emotional states, often isolated and melancholy.

This visually stunning volume is the first to document in its entirety Andy Warhol’s graphically charged and occasionally whimsical work in textiles and fashion.

Spanning more than three decades, this book highlights a little-known but influential aspect of Warhol’s creative output: his inventive use of printed fabrics and wearable design. From roller-printed cottons and border patterns in the 1950s to screen-printed garments in the ’70s and ’80s, these works reveal the foundations of his Pop aesthetic—serial imagery, commercial motifs, and a playful engagement with surface and form.

His designs appeared on T-shirts, handkerchiefs, silk scarves, laundry bags, underwear, and jackets—everyday items he purchased off the rack and transformed through image and repetition. These early textile creations also mark a crucial step in his artistic development, serving as the origin of the serialization that would define his entire body of work. Because these designs were never intended for galleries or museums, they remained largely overlooked—until now.

Featuring over 200 illustrations, many previously unpublished, the book showcases Warhol’s collaborations with manufacturers and designers, including projects with Stephen Sprouse, Halston, and Interview magazine. It also includes promotional pieces, garments made from his textiles, and rare ephemera that place these creations within the broader context of mid-century and postmodern design. Warhol expert Paul Maréchal offers fresh insight into how these works blurred the line between art and commerce, long before artist–brand collaborations became the norm.

His engaging text repositions Warhol not as a conventional fashion figure, but as a visual innovator who reimagined how patterns, products, and popular culture could intersect. Rich in detail and visual flair, this book is essential for Warhol admirers and anyone interested in the crosscurrents of art, clothing, and design.

'Honest and extraordinary' GUARDIAN

'A remarkable book - and an original, beautiful mind' EVENING STANDARD

Here I am, a fucked, crazy, anorexic-alcoholic-childless, beautiful woman. I never dreamed it would be like this.

Welcome to Strangeland.

The incandescent world of Tracey Emin.

Encompassing the Margate of her childhood, the Turkey of her forefathers and the art-filled chaos of her thirty-something life in London.

Intimate and original, these confessions are deeply moving. In spite of the challenges she faces, Tracey remains profoundly romantic and uncompromisingly honest. Here is her life on the page.

This twentieth-anniversary edition, with a new introduction from Emin herself, celebrates the formative memories of one of Britain's greatest contemporary artists.

A comprehensive examination of drawings from the Low Countries (present-day Luxembourg, Belgium and the Netherlands) dating from around 1430 to around 1600. This book is the culmination of a five-year research project combining curatorial, conservation and scientific expertise from the British Museum. The Low Countries were the economic and artistic powerhouse of northern Europe in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. This book charts the development and function of drawings as valuable records of creativity and exchange, shedding light on artistic techniques, styles and workshop practice. Key questions are addressed, such as: how these early drawings were made, used and understood by their contemporaries. Case studies selected from over 1,200 sheets from the British Museum’s outstanding collection are brought together to present a new paradigm for the understanding of Netherlandish drawings. Highlights include works by renowned artists Rogier van der Weyden, Lucas van Leyden, Pieter Bruegel and Hendrick Goltzius. With a focus on function and material, new connections from across the period enable the presentation of a unified narrative of drawing in the region.

An intimate, revelatory family biography of the iconic writer Daphne du Maurier, by her eldest surviving grandson

Born into a famous artistic dynasty, Daphne grew up in an atmosphere of bohemian privilege. At a time when girls of her class were not expected to have a career, she defied convention and moved to Cornwall to pursue her ambition to become a writer. There, over six decades, she dreamt up the stories that have sold tens of millions of copies worldwide and still haunt our cultural imagination, including Rebecca, Jamaica Inn and 'The Birds'.

Last Night I Dreamt explores how the turbulence and contradictions of Daphne's own life - spanning war, affairs, and unrequited love - inspired her writing. It also uncovers the powerful influence of her notable forebears, in particular her domineering father Gerald, the most famous actor-manager of his generation, and her grandfather George, a renowned Victorian novelist and cartoonist.

Paul de Zulueta, Daphne's eldest surviving grandchild, has drawn on private family archives, new interviews and his own memories of his grandmother, a woman who profoundly shaped his life. In doing so, he gives us an extraordinary look into the world of Daphne du Maurier with rare closeness and emotional candour, and a moving portrait of one of the great British artistic families of the 19th and 20th centuries.

Explore the wonder and magic of the fantastic fifth taste with over 60 tantalizing recipes that take flavour to another dimension. Umami is both ubiquitous and elusive, present but often unrecognized, and it has the extraordinary ability to enhance individual flavours, transporting dishes to another level. It is the taste that keeps on giving long after salty, sweet, bitter and sour flavours are spent. Umami is a Japanese word that translates as ‘savoury deliciousness’, but it is far from a Far Eastern concept. It is absolutely universal and does not belong to any single culture – it can be shared, enjoyed and appreciated by all those in possession of a tongue. Everyone has experienced it – the salted anchovy that melts into the tomato of a pizza, the irresistible marriage of pancetta and Parmesan in a creamy spaghetti carbonara or the rich, caramelized chorizo in a pan-fried calamari and chorizo salad. Once understood, umami is your best friend both in and out of the kitchen. In this book, you’ll discover extraordinary new flavour combinations in dishes such as Steak Tagliata, Umami Rub and Garlic Pesto; Dark Chocolate and Orange Chilli Con Carne; and Sunshine Laksa with Crab, Snow Peas and Millet. This book contains a taste of the wonder and magic of umami, and once bitten you will forever be smitten. Umami is a fantastic new edition of At Home with Umami.

A vivid history of the evolution of printmaking as a means of creative expression, from prehistory to the present dayThe significance of printmaking within the history of art is often underplayed, obscured or misunderstood. This book tells the story of artist prints from across the globe in a manner that is accessible and engaging. It demystifies how prints are made—from woodblock to etching—and explores how, throughout history, printmaking has defied easy categorisation, straddling “fine” art practices and commercially minded production. In fact, it has been employed as much for creative experimentation as it has for disseminating information. Beginning in ancient East Asia and travelling through Renaissance Europe, revolutionary Mexico, and post-Apartheid South Africa, these ten chapters celebrate the interconnected nature of the printed image and its multiple histories, while illuminating the lesser-known players who have been deliberately or erroneously overlooked. Whether formed by slicing linoleum or plunging plates into acid, then distributed via bound books or pasted posters, the print has not just replicated the world, it has shaped it.

Published in celebration of the Hollywood star’s 100th birthday and in association with the Marilyn Monroe estate, to accompany the exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery. Marilyn Monroe: A Portrait celebrates Monroe’s enduring legacy as a cultural icon, by exploring her impact on photography, art and film. Marilyn Monroe was one of the most famous and photographed women of the twentieth century whose cultural significance continues to fascinate generations. Marilyn Monroe: A Portrait reflects on Monroe’s extraordinary impact on photographers and artists, showing familiar and rarely seen photographs of her, alongside outstanding artworks made during her lifetime and afterwards, that collectively create a portrait of her. Today, as we better understand the challenges Monroe faced in her life and the agency she sought in shaping her career, her photographs have accumulated new meanings and captivated new audiences. From her collaborations with photographers such as Eve Arnold and Richard Avedon to bold reinterpretations of her by Pop artists including Pauline Boty and Andy Warhol, Monroe’s image has been continually reimagined, speaking to her lasting impact on visual culture and our understanding of beauty, fame, and power. Far more than a Hollywood star, Monroe was a complex figure; ambitious, witty, charismatic, and deeply involved in the crafting of her public persona. Marilyn Monroe: A Portrait includes contributions from the actor, director and writer Lena Dunham, playwright and cultural commentator Bonnie Greer and feminist art historian Griselda Pollock, who offer fresh and personal perspectives on Monroe’s cultural significance and enduring legacy.

A legendary artist’s life and work unfold in vibrant pop-up form.

Step into the world of Frida Kahlo through 5 of her most celebrated works reimagined as three-dimensional scenes.

Parrots and monkeys, family and flowers, fashion and jewellery, her bright blue house—Frida Kahlo’s paintings are filled with the things she cherished.

This striking pop-up book invites children and families to step into her world through five of her most celebrated works reimagined as three-dimensional scenes that reveal her love of animals, her family roots, her courage in the face of pain, her ties to Mexico and her artistic struggles with the capitalist-industrialist complex outside her homeland that provided the market for her paintings.

Short texts and quotes from Frida explain each image in language that even young readers can easily understand. An introduction, a concise biography, and reproductions of the original paintings are woven throughout, offering context while deepening the reader’s connection to her life and art.

Created by award-winning paper engineer Maike Biederstädt, the book glows with vivid Mexican colors and dramatic design. Both playful and profound, it offers an inspiring introduction to one of the world’s most iconic artists—and a reminder that art can hold the deepest truths of who we are.

‘Offers a crisp and intelligent perspective on the sociopolitical currents that shaped [Hiroshige’s] vision’ – The New European ‘And therein lies the power of this beautiful book as it reveals Hiroshige’s vast artistic imagination and astonishing technical skill. This really is a book you’ll want to read again and again. Just superb!’ – Arts Hub Hiroshige was one of Japan’s most talented, prolific and popular artists. Famed for his landscapes, he was also a great observer of nature with a visionary approach to colour and brushwork. His legacy continues to influence and inspire artists today. Over a career spanning four decades, the prolific Utagawa Hiroshige (1797–1858) produced thousands of landscape and nature prints, hundreds of paintings commissioned by the samurai elite, as well as many illustrated books. His work appealed to every stratum of society. While some of his landscape prints, such as Evening Snow – Kanbara and Ohashi – Evening Rain, are well-known examples of Japanese art, the full range of his output is less familiar. Hiroshige came from a samurai family, but he crossed social boundaries and devoted himself to depicting popular customs and the world around him. His work is distinguished by an air of gentle grace and decorum, perhaps arising partly from his steady temperament. His calm artistic vision sustained his contemporaries through the uncertainties of daily life and changing times. A great colourist, he stands out for discovering a subtle lyricism in the experience of travel, and a bond between people and the natural world. Featuring highlights from leading private collections of Hiroshige prints, alongside works by Hiroshige and other artists from the British Museum’s outstanding collection of Japanese art and from other major collections, this lavishly illustrated new publication celebrates one of the world’s most accomplished artists.

Reverberations of the young rebels and influencers in the artist group Brücke.

The artist group Brücke is Germany’s most important contribution to international modernism. The group was formed in Dresden in 1905 by four young architecture students: Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Otto Bleyl, Erich Heckel, and Karl Schmidt-Rottluff. Together they developed a painting style with vivid colors, simplified forms, and large color fields that express internal feelings rather than reproducing an external reality. The group disbanded in 1913, but their collaboration and marketing strategies have been inspirational for several generations of artists.

These young artists wanted to renew art and life in the German Imperial Empire and break with the prevailing moral norms of the day. They were interested in topics like man and nature; the naked body; portraits; self-portraits; the merging of life and art; and life in the vibrant metropolis of Berlin. In a time like the present, when a young generation feels the need for a new way of living, thinking, and organizing, reflecting on Brücke feels particularly relevant.

Among the many treasures of the al-Sabah Collection, Kuwait, are hundreds of chess and other games pieces dating from the 7th to the 19th centuries ce. Intricately crafted in a rich variety of materials, including ivory, wood, ceramic, glass, jade and agate, these tiny objects are of enormous historical and artistic significance. They not only mark the evolution of familiar games into their modern forms, but also evoke the imperial palaces, military camps and herders’ tents in which they were played over many centuries, from the Sasanian period through the Islamic era in Central Asia, Iran, present-day Iraq and northern India. The chess pieces include both early figural sets and the more abstract forms that later became popular throughout the Islamic world. Dice, pachesi sets and a medieval Arabic treatise on chess complete the collection.

Uncover art history by discovering what makes a masterpiece great.

Across eras, painters have pulled on their past and present to create works celebrated far into the future. But while museums are filled with artworks considered to be genius, it can be difficult to understand why these particular paintings have earned that title.

In The Art of Reading Art, Matthew Olivier expands his exceptionally popular online series (@matthewolivierx) to conversationally break down some of history’s great paintings, from Bosch’s The Conjurer and Jan van Eyck’s The Arnolfini Portrait to Edward Hopper’s Nighthawks. In his uniquely welcoming style, Olivier captures, for readers, what these paintings say, and how exactly they say it.

Traveling across periods and styles, Olivier’s focus isn’t on a timeline of movements, or on creating an academic catalogue. Rather, his writing uncovers what makes over 100 of history’s artworks so special. From discussions of history and technique to analysis of what details say about a work and its painter, The Art of Reading Art helps readers dive deeper into paintings without the need for an art history degree.

Capturing the natural beauty of coastal landscapes and the delicate play of light on water, this volume celebrates impressionist depictions of nautical and beachside life.

The impressionists were forever inspired by the sea, which Claude Monet considered “a wonderful teacher for landscape artists.” The movement’s penchant for plein air painting and its characteristic style, with delicate brushstrokes and incomparable color palettes, was perfectly suited to portrayals of the sea and its perpetual movement, from gently rippling waves to raging storms.

Capturing the natural beauty of coastal landscapes and the delicate play of light on water, this volume illuminates the works of Claude Monet, Édouard Manet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Camille Pissarro, Berthe Morisot, Gustave Courbet, Paul Gauguin, Eugène Boudin, Johan Barthold Jongkind, and more, taking readers on a journey along shorelines and beaches—from the coasts of Normandy and Brittany, to the Mediterranean Sea, to Tahiti—to discover all aspects of nautical and seaside life in the nineteenth century.

Portraits of children playing in the sand or strolling vacationers at seaside resorts contrast with scenes of the maritime industry, which depict the hustle and bustle of ports with their dockers, the to-and-fro of passing ships, and fishermen at work in boats. Atmospheric marine landscapes abound, from rugged cliffs and jagged rocks emerging from the waves to serene sunsets or sunrises along the horizon.

Published in collaboration with the Musée des Impressionnismes Giverny, this volume includes 110 paintings and drawings, presented alongside photographs by masters such as Gustave Le Gray, which transport readers to the very coastlines interpreted by the impressionists.

Florence Gentner
Travel alongside Claude Monet to twenty destinations where he created his most famous work – including Venice, Rouen, Étretat, Antibes and London – all of which nourished his mastery of light. Claude Monet was a lifelong traveller. For more than fifty years, he made his way through Europe, looking for remarkable scenes, reflections, nuances and transparencies of light to capture through his painting – the result of patient, obsessive observation. From Normandy to Venice, via London, Brittany, the Mediterranean and the banks of the Seine, his travels were far more than mere journeys: they were an incessant quest for visual sensations. Florence Gentner retraces his artistic and personal trajectory, showing how twenty destinations profoundly influenced some 250 of his major works, as well as the evolution of his palette. Extracts from more than 100 letters, numerous sketches, notebook excerpts and reproductions reveal the circumstances of his journeys and convey the painter’s state of mind while he was away from home. His travel paintings constitute an exceptional body of work, enriched, for each trip, by an insightful analysis from Marine Kiesel. Part artistic biography, part travelogue, and presented in a beautiful printed cloth hardcover binding, Monet Abroad reveals the modernity and insatiable curiosity of a painter constantly in search of new horizons and new subjects.

A collection of essays that opens up new connections between Francis Bacon’s art and the ideas of key thinkers. Francis Bacon is undoubtedly one of the most important artists of the twentieth century. In his paintings, Bacon radically disfigures his subjects, making them all but unrecognizable. This is no mere stylistic quirk, but the expression of a deeply held aesthetic vision. For Bacon, the essence of a subject can only be captured in the distorted recording of its appearance. His disfigurations are therefore, as he himself says, attempts to bring back the intensity of reality, to paint images that are ‘truer than the literal truth’. In this groundbreaking collection of essays, some of today’s leading philosophers and psychoanalytic theorists go to work on Bacon. They do to the artist what the artist does to his own figures: they disfigure and distort him, twisting and turning him into something new and previously unseen. This strategy of disfiguration blasts Bacon out of his traditional contexts, opening up new connections between his art and the ideas of key thinkers, including Kant, Marx, Nietzsche, Baudelaire, Freud, Canguilhem, Genet, Lacan, Adorno and Althusser. The results are revelatory, allowing us to transform our understanding not only of Bacon but also of modernism itself.
