Virgil
This new Aeneid—the first collaborative translation of the poem in English—is rendered in an unrhymed iambic pentameter that engages modern readers while preserving the epic dignity and pathos of the original. Scott McGill and Susannah Wright’s version faithfully conveys the poem’s delicate balance between its triumphant celebration of the Roman Empire and its sensitivity to the human costs of antiquity’s most powerful and influential society. The result is a poem in English every bit as complex, inviting and affecting as the Latin original. With a rich introduction from Emily Wilson, and the full complement of maps and supporting material that have made Wilson’s Homer translations the standard for our time, this gorgeous edition of Rome’s founding epic will capture the imaginations and stir the souls of a new generation of readers.

Josie Balka

For fans of Rupi Kaur and Cleo Wade, this first collection of poetry from the viral TikTok poet Josie Balka, evokes themes of nostalgia, love, envy, and hope, speaking to the universal longings that live deep in our souls.

I've never seen anyone at a public pool with a memorable enough body, good or bad, that I think about it ever again.

If this line sounds familiar, it's because you've heard it in the background of thousands of videos on social media-a humbling reminder from poet and radio personality Josie Balka that what's important in our lives now isn't necessarily what's important to us in the long run.

I Hope You Remember, Josie's first book of poetry, includes this poem and over eighty others, some previously published and others never shared before. Every page in this collection hits home, rhapsodizing on universal experiences like jealousy, family relationships, complex body image, falling in and out of love (with others and yourself), and the everchanging lens of nostalgia. With sparse, clear prose, Josie's poetry looks to bring forth deep feelings like grief, envy, apathy, joy, and, most importantly, hope.

Evocative and full of force, these poems will hit you in the gut, pull your heartstrings, and make you long for moments past.

Ted Hughes

Ted Hughes's Birthday Letters are addressed, with just two exceptions, to Sylvia Plath, the American poet to whom he was married. They were written over a period of more than twenty-five years, the first a few years after her suicide in 1963, and represent Ted Hughes's only account of his relationship with Plath and of the psychological drama that led both to the writing of her greatest poems and to her death. The book became an instant bestseller on its publication in 1998 and won the Forward Prize for Poetry in the same year.

'To read [Birthday Letters] is to experience the psychic equivalent of "the bends". It takes you down to levels of pressure where the undertruths of sadness and endurance leave you gasping.' Seamus Heaney

'Even if it were possible to set aside its biographical value . . . its linguistic, technical and imaginative feats would guarantee its future. Hughes is one of the most important poets of the century and this is his greatest book.' Andrew Motion

A visceral, surrealist tale of becoming, from the shamanic cult hero of contemporary queer poetry

Beguiling, outrageous, playfully morbid and frequently stunning in its surreal flights of imagination, The Book of Frank follows the eponymous figure as he grows from his troubled childhood into an adult travesty of the ostensibly straight family man in a male-dominated world. Along the way, he navigates a series of darkly comic situations, commits acts of grotesque violence, loses his soul in the post and debates boundary lines with a pig. Frank is one of the great literary creations: a man who can declare that 'however we seek another's weakness is our tyranny', as often touchingly innocent as he is monstrously cruel.

Called 'a contemporary masterpiece' by Thurston Moore, a 'desert island book' by Anne Boyer and 'this generation's Dream Songs' by Maggie Nelson, The Book of Frank is one of the crucial poetic works of this century so far. Now, on the 30th anniversary of the first Frank poems' appearance, it is published in the UK for the first time.

POETRY BOOK SOCIETY RECOMMENDATION

Postcolonial Love Poem
is a thunderous river of a book, an anthem of desire against erasure. It demands that every body carried in its pages – bodies of language, land, suffering brothers, enemies and lovers – be touched and held. Here, the bodies of indigenous, Latinx, black and brown women are simultaneously the body politic and the body ecstatic, and portrayed with a glowing intimacy: the alphabet of a hand in the dark, the hips’ silvered percussion, a thigh’s red-gold geometry, the emerald tigers that leap in a throat. In claiming this autonomy of desire, language is pushed to its dark edges, the astonishing dune fields and forests where pleasure and love are both grief and joy, violence and sensuality.

Natalie Diaz defies the conditions from which she writes, a nation whose creation predicated the diminishment and ultimate erasure of bodies like hers and the people she loves. Her poetry questions what kind of future we might create, built from the choices we make now – how we might learn our own cures and ‘go where there is love’.
